Masons have an unerring way of recognising each other no matter what the circumstances. On returning from a tasking whilst in Iraq, one of my Officer’s told me to follow him and we ended up at Basra Palace. A small group of Brethren met up briefly and enjoyed Ration Pack Menu D (Pork Cassoulet) whilst watching tracer fire from the roof. I was the lowest rank by several pay grades but was ‘voluntold’ to be Worshipful Master as I was a reigning Master of a Lodge in the UK!

Awarded the Worshipful Company of Lightmongers Military Meritorious Service Award 2005

Awarded the Lord Lieutenant’s Certificate for Meritorious Service 2006

What rank were you on leaving?

On leaving 579 Field Squadron I was a Sergeant (Sgt. Daniel Unthank). I then became an Instructor with the Cadet Forces (RAF Cadets 2008 to 2012 as a Flight Sergeant, Combined Cadet Force (Flt. Sgt. Daniel Unthank) 2012 to present, currently a Captain (Capt. Daniel Unthank).

How did you join Freemasonry?

I grew up with Freemasonry. My father has been a mason for over 40 years so from a young age I went to social events and met members of the Lodge

What do you get from Freemasonry?

The main benefit is the feeling of belonging. Freemasonry is a brotherhood and wherever you go you are always welcome. It’s also a great way to escape the normal stresses of life. For a few hours a week you can just enjoy the company of friends.
